How does licensing work for the Artist?
Almost every publication, website, business, company required illustrations, photos or images in their branding- we'll call these imagery. Imagery is done in-house/studio, in which case the copyright stays with the studio or are commissioned to freelance artists or photographers, where copyright usage varies from person to person. illustrationVAULT provides easy and quick access to millions of illustrations that shutterstock and other stock photo websites simply don't have access to.
How does illustrationVAULT benefit the Artist?
Aside from having an awesome free website and optimized SEO profile and allowing artists to sell training videos as well as publish artbooks quickly and easily. illustrationVAULT allows artists to bid on freelance projects and monetize existing/old artwork through image licensing with a cloud of copyright protection and fair pay regardless of their geographic location. This means you can sell usage rights of one image (even if it was commissioned by another client- varies on your client agreement) as many times as you wish without losing your copyright.
Can I hire more than one Artist?
Yes, every artist on illustrationVAULT accepts project inquiries. illustrationVAULT does not guarantee artist availability, however we can facilitate your hiring process and recommend artists.
Are Artists on illustrationVAULT any good?

What's the cost of hiring an Artist?
Each artist sets their own hourly wage in USD currency, you may negotiate a flat rate for a project as well. illustrationVAULT takes a small commission from each artist for completed projects to cover transaction and website fees.
As a general rule artists rates range from $300 to $2000 per day depending on the popularity of the artist, style and complexity of the work they're creating. You may hire an artist based on days or hours, once you provide your project specifications, the artist will provide you with an estimate of time required to complete a project. Furthermore in some cases, there can be additional licensing fees concerning the uses, the territory, the length of use (amount of time) and the possible sale of the original physical artworks.
How fast can I get my project done?
Every artist is different and works at different speeds. Some styles are quick and several artwokrs a day can be created, others require many days per image, the detail and complexity of the artist portfolios gives you a pretty good idea of how long an image will take to complete. Once you sign an agreement with our agency, you’ll be able to review artist portfolios and see the length of time it took to create each of the images and our agents can assist you with the quoting process as well so you will never get overcharged. What sort of details do you need to get a proper quote?
We want to ensure that our clients understand thoroughly the processes of commissioning our artists for an illustration, a book, an ad campaign, a storyboard, concept work on a film or video game or any other creative project you may require an artist for.
- Below are some questions that will help us and the artist when quoting you:
- Describe what the composition might involve? people? animals? landscapes? etc...
- Can you send over a visual or detailed art specs?
- What are the final dimensions of the illustration? 1/4, 1/2, Full Page, if known?
- How many illustrations do you require?
- Do you have samples or reference ideas you like as a style guide/reference?
- Can you send over layouts with text in place so the artists knows the exact space they have to work with, if available?
- If illustrations are for a book, what is the trim size of the book?
- When would you like the artwork created, i.e. your timing?
- Where will this advertisement, brochure, book be distributed, nationally or Worldwide etc?
- Would you like to use the images solely in the book, or in other places, such as merchandising?
- Our artists are top professionals who work with large companies, please provide realistic budgets if you have an idea and don't lowball the artists.
Who owns the copyrights of the work produced?
Project terms are negotiated between clients and the artists. illustrationVAULT protects the copyrights of all artists and offers copyright education and tools to ensure every artist has equal treatment regardless of their geographic location. In most cases artists appoint illustrationVAULT to negotiate project terms on their behalf so they can focus on their work.
Can I post a project publically on illustrationVault?
This option is under development. This option will allow you to post freelance projects and choose which artists you'd prefer to work with. Each will have the option of providing a quote if they're available.
Why don't i know how much an Artist charges?
illustrationVAULT keeps hourly wages hidden to ensure price gouging doesn't happen and fair pay is enforced throughout the industry. You choose the artists based on the quality of their portfolio and invite them to bid, all bids are kept in confidence and you're the only one that sees them. Clients that disclose the hourly rate of an artist may be banned from using illustrationVAULT again.
What if the Artist doesn't deliver my project?
Life happens, in the event of a project cancellation, you will receive 100% of your funds deposited and teamed up with a replacement artist with equal or lower hourly rate.
How do project payments and deposits work?
Client will provide a 20% deposit of the project total upon contract acceptance by the Artist. Project payments and deposits are held in-trust by illustrationVAULT until final approval and release of all materials by the Artist to the Client at which time the client will provide the final payment. The Artist must adhere to contract deadlines to qualify for full payment. If the Artist does not deliver on deadline, Client may terminate the contract and all payments will be refunded to Client. Payments to artists are released within 72 hours of final delivery through Paypal, otherwise a check will be issued on the 1st day of each month.
Are there contracts to sign?
Clients and Artists are required to sign a digital contract and Non Disclosure Agreement in some cases for works produced. Artists are encouraged to maintain quality of work and professional attitude as they will be reviewed on completion of work.
Why wouldn't I work directly with the artist or the client?
Clients and Artists are encouraged to use illustrationVAULT to facilitate their transactions, protect their interests & copyrights and ensure they get paid. International artists who wish to fall under fair pay protection must conduct business through illustrationVAULT. We cannot stop Artists or clients from doing business offline, however we have seen cases of clients not receiving their artwork, missing or delayed payments, refusal of payments. illustrationVAULT is handles and mediates legal matters between clients and artists.
